Paul Skenes Drops Into the Middle of a Deadlocked Race
The Guardians won yesterday, the White Sox lost, and the two clubs now sit exactly even at the top of the division. Cleveland gets to host that swing in momentum today, except the visiting team happens to be sending Paul Skenes to the mound against Joey Cantillo. A Pirates team that has nothing to play for beyond pride can still complicate a contender's day in a hurry when its ace is on the bump, and Cleveland knows it. Every out Cantillo can find against a Pittsburgh lineup built around Skenes matters just as much as anything happening between Cleveland and Chicago's own head to head record.
Meanwhile, Chicago gets its own chance to answer, sending Sean Burke to Toronto to face Trey Yesavage and a Blue Jays team still trying to climb out of the bottom of the AL East. A loss there would hand the Guardians sole possession of first place by the end of the afternoon. A win keeps Chicago right where it has been for weeks now, tied at the very top and daring Cleveland to pull ahead first.
Philadelphia Closes the Gap on Atlanta
At Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies have trimmed their deficit to two games after picking up a win while Atlanta dropped its last one. Nolan McLean starts for a Mets team still last in the NL East, and Alan Rangel takes the ball for Philadelphia in front of a crowd that senses the division might actually be reachable. Down the road at Truist Park, the Braves try to stop a one game skid from becoming something longer, with Nathan Eovaldi opposing Grant Holmes and Texas. A soft landing spot on paper is exactly the kind of afternoon a slipping contender needs to find its footing again.
The Dodgers Head East With Nothing but Room to Fall
Los Angeles carries the best record in the sport into Yankee Stadium tonight, and the matchup means something different depending on which side of the field you are standing on. New York sits two games back of Tampa Bay in the AL East after a loss of its own, while the Rays have now dropped four straight, a stretch that has quietly opened the division back up. The Yankees cannot control what Tampa Bay does, but a strong showing against the sport's top team would be exactly the kind of statement win a club in this position needs.
Around the Rest of the Slate
Boston's win streak has stretched to a dozen games, a stretch that has turned a once comfortable gap in the AL East into a race worth watching, even with Shane McClanahan opposing Sonny Gray at Fenway Park in a game where the Rays are trying to find their footing again. Milwaukee holds a large division lead and sends Robert Gasser out against Miami's Eury Pérez. Minnesota visits Wrigley Field with Zebby Matthews opposing Shota Imanaga and the Cubs, San Diego and Kansas City meet with Germán Márquez against Noah Cameron, and Baltimore sends Brandon Young to Houston to face Hunter Brown. Detroit and the Angels, Cincinnati and Colorado, Washington and the Athletics, San Francisco and Seattle, and St. Louis and Arizona round out an afternoon that offers something for nearly every time zone.
Why Today Is Worth Watching
A tied division race, an ace pitching for a team with nothing to lose, and two contenders trying to close ground on the leaders above them all land on the same schedule today.
